Night Shift

The Cobra's Hood

Volume 3, Episode 9

Friday, November 26th, 1999 (Thanksgiving Friday).  The power item theft spree has continued while the SOB team was dealing with the Caligulator; beat officers have had to deal with an increase in illegal use of power artefacts.  Fortunately, Smax is back on the job (as is Slinger).  The SOB team turns its attention back to the case, especially since Grand Central is getting impatient.

The Power brothers have gone to ground but are believed to still be in town.  Among Segama's new crime-fighting group, the Wild Thingz, The Mongoose has a connection to get in touch with her arch-enemy, The Cobra.  Seymour "The Cobra" Fanglestein is a human with a fixation on the snake motif; The Mongoose just ran him in a few days ago and he was caught with a Staff of Frost.  Because it didn't go with the snake theme, he had trie to redecorate it and cause a malfunction.

They check the lead; The Cobra's bail has been posted by his former sidekick, The Hood (formerly Daybreak Newstar Sitrajanipan, now Raymond Smith).  The team visits The Cobra's last known residence in Lantern Hill, a an old faux-Egyptian building, the Ra-Atun.  Seymour Fanglestein's parents, near-sighted mom Mika and former dentist and trivia king Alexi, still live there.  They allow the SOB team to examine Seymour's flat and take his notes.

Next, the team goes to look for Raymond Smith, showing up at his mobile home in Mardale while he's off work (he's a cab driver).  Ray has Seymour there, coaxes and bullies him into talking to the SOB.  Seymour says he got the number for the "firesale" from his villain support group and discussion circle, The Brotherhood; he thinks he may have gotten it from fellow member Hammerhead.  Among the firesale customers was one of Archie Nemesis' lieutenants, Marty "Dynamo Toad" Jackson.

Back at the station, Lt. Therius deals with Lt. Romulus from Grand Central, who complains about the lack of progress on the power item thefts.  Captain Traynor is supportive of his team.  Romulus gives them three days to break the case.

Nitro and Segama create a persona for a would-be assassin markswoman who wants to buy a ranged weapon, "Madame Scarlet", the MBA (Master of Brutal Assassination).  They create a background for her that will stand up to scrutiny, and plan on infiltrating the next firesale.

When Eulalia Segama returns home at the end of her shift, she finds a heavy, unlabelled box.  A little antsy, she asks Nitro to check it; Nitro's examination confirms a small radio-source inside an ovoid object inside!  She immediately contains the potential bomb and transports it to the station's lab for deactivation.  After what seems like hours of tense work, the metal ovoid suddenly snaps open – and reveals a cyborg rabbit.
