Night Shift

Volume 3, Episode 4

Friday, November 19th, 1999.  Parker hurriedly excuses himself for the rest of the shift, claiming a family emergency.  Continuing with the investigation in Snowtown, the rest of the SOB team visits the victim's boyfriend, Jamie "Kix" Nguyen.  He wears a leather jacket, his hair in a ponytail, and likes to scowl a lot.  He's good looking in a teenager sort of way.  He has very nice tattoos all along his arms and legs, Asian motifs of dragons and flowers (and of course the Snowtown tag.)

He definitely doesn't like cops - what have they ever done for him?  Cops don't visit Snowtown too often, and they're never friendly when they do show up.  But Jamie did care for Rachel and is angry as all Hell about her murder.

The team coaxes Jamie to talk about Rachel.  They learn that she hated her job and her life; she lived in Snowtown because she wanted her powers neutralized, though she never told him what they were.  However, Rachel had recently seemed a little more cheerful.  She was hoping to get a different job, said she might have an opening for an office job.  Jamie rummages around and finds a few personal effects Rachel left at his place, in which they find a somewhat worn business card for D.T. Valeriano, political consultant, with a P.O. box address in downtown Neopolis.

As the team leaves Jamie's tenement apartment, they're ambushed by the Fanboys!  They fight mostly with knives - very sharp blades of all shapes and sizes - but aluminium baseball bats, 2x4s, and brass knuckles are also popular.  It's an unpowered battle for the SOB, but the Fanboys like the safety of superior numbers and are eventually convinced to retreat when they take enough casualties.

The team leaves friendly Snowtown and returns to the station.  They need to get a warrant, and talk to Judge Fredd again, in order to gain access to the D.T. Valeriano P.O. box.  Inside the box, they find only two envelopes: one from Rachel, and another envelope addressed to this P.O. box but for Lt. Therius...
