Field and Construction Experience

Water Quality

I am familiar with many field and laboratory sampling and testing procedures for water quality and water chemistry, particularly from Standard Methods for Water and Wastewater Examination.  Procedures I am fluent with include biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS) and  total solids (TS) with or without volatiles, nitrate, ammonia, phosphate, alkalinity, hardness, chlorine demand, pH, electroconductivity, dissolved oxygen, and many others.
 

• Weekly sampling and testing of influent and effluent from constructed wetlands cells for wastewater treatment (March 1998 through January 1999).  Field and laboratory testing included temperature, BOD, COD, TSS, pH, and electroconductivity.
   
• Field sampling and analysis of macrophyte productivity in constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment  (1998).
   
• Preparation and supervision of field water quality experiments for a class on constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment (1998).
   
• Water quality analysis (1997-1999).  Preparation and supervision of laboratories for various water chemistry tests for introductory and advanced classes in water chemistry.
   
• Stream cross-sections and surveying (1997).  Participation in the field work for a baseline study on an impacted stream before restoration activities were undertaken.
   
• Groundwater sampling (1996).  Field testing of turbidity, pH, and electroconductivity.  Sampling for laboratory testing, including full quality assurance program, for groundwater monitoring on and around landfills.

Soils and Geosynthetic Projects

I have been involved with all types of geosynthetics, as well as concrete and earthwork, in containment applications. I have worked as CQC or CQA inspector on the installation of over 6 million square feet of geomembranes on over 30 projects.

I am familiar with all aspects of monitoring and documentation for the installation of geosynthetic containment systems, as well as related soil placement procedures. My experience includes conducting and overseeing both nondestructive tests and destructive tests on geosynthetics in the field, as well as in-place soils density and moisture tests. I have also worked in laboratory testing of geosynthetics, both physical and chemical, and of soils.

• Double-Lined Leachate Pond (1997), Olympic View Sanitary Landfill. Client: USA-Waste, Port Orchard, Washington. On-site Quality Assurance Monitor for soils density testing, as well as the installation and welding of 88,000 ft² (8,200 m²) of textured HDPE membrane, 60 mil (1.5 mm) thick, along with geotextiles, GCL, and geonets.
   
• Composite Landfill Liner, Primary and Secondary (1997), Riverbend Landfill. Client: USA-Waste, McMinnville, Oregon. On-site Quality Assurance Monitor for the installation and welding of 475,000 ft² (44,000 m²) of textured HDPE membrane, 60 mil (1.5 mm) thick, along with geotextiles, GCL, and geonets.
   
• Composite Landfill Liner (1996), Sunshine Canyon Landfill. Client: Brown-Ferris Industries, Sylmar, California. On-site Quality Assurance Monitor for the installation and welding of 475,000 ft² (44,000 m²) of textured HDPE membrane, 60 mil (1.5 mm) thick, along with geotextiles, GCL, and geonets.
   
• Double-Lined Leachate Pond (1995), Sonoma Central Landfill. Client: County of Sonoma, Cotati, California. On-site Quality Assurance Manager for the installation and welding of 220,000 ft² (20,000 m²) of textured HDPE membrane, 60 mil (1.5 mm) thick, along with geotextiles, GCL, and geonets.
   
• Composite Landfill Liner (1995), 1994 NE Disposal Unit. Client: City Garbage Company of Eureka (Norcal Waste Systems), Eureka, California. On-site Quality Assurance Manager for the installation and welding of 110,000 ft² (10,000 m²) of textured HDPE membrane, 60 mil (1.5 mm) thick, along with clay liner, geotextiles, GCL, and geonets.
   
• Composite Landfill Liner (1995), Vasco Road Landfill.  Client: BFI Inc., Livermore, California.  On-site Quality Assurance Monitor for the installation and welding of 220,000 ft² (20,000 m²) of textured HDPE membrane, 60 mil (1.5 mm) thick, along with bentonite-soil liner, geotextiles, and geonets.
   
• Soil Vapour Barrier and Foundation Waterproofing (1993), Building 10. Client: Hewlett-Packard, Palo Alto, California. On-site Quality Assurance Monitor for the installation of 50,000 ft² (5,000 m²) of sprayed-on "Liquid Boot" chloroprene modified asphaltic emulsion, 80 mil (2 mm) thick, along with geotextiles.
   
• Aeration Ponds (1992), Town of Mattawa, Ontario, Canada. On-site Quality Assurance Manager for the installation and welding of 650,000 ft² (60,000 m²) of HDPE membrane, 60 mil (1.5 mm) thick, along with geotextiles and geonets.
   
• Maximum Security Landfill Cover (1992), Cell No. 9. Client: PPG Canada inc., Beauharnois, Québec, Canada. On-site Quality Assurance Manager for the installation and welding of 296,000 ft² (27,500 m²) of HDPE membrane, 60 mil (1.5 mm) thick, along with geotextiles and a clay liner.
   
• Double-Lined Maximum Security Landfill (1992), Cell No. 10. Client: PPG Canada inc., Beauharnois, Québec. On-site Quality Assurance Manager for the installation and welding of 565,000 ft² (52,500 m²) of HDPE membrane, 80 mil (2 mm) thick, along with geotextiles, geonet and a clay liner.
   
• Double-Lined Leachate Storage Ponds (1991), Faraday Landfill. Client: Township of Faraday, Bancroft, Ontario. On-site Quality Assurance Manager for the installation and welding of 142,000 ft² (13,000 m²) of HDPE membrane, 80 mil (2 mm) thick, along with geotextiles and geonets.
   
• Stock Pad Secondary Containment (1991). Client: PPG Canada inc., Beauharnois, Québec. Quality Assurance Manager for the shop fabrication and field installation of 10,000 ft² (900 m²) of PVC membrane, 30 mil (0.75 mm) thick, along with geotextiles.
   
• Double-Lined Leachate Storage Pond (1991), Colonie Sanitary Landfill. Client: Town of Colonie, New York. On-site Quality Control Manager for the installation and welding of 77,500 ft² (7,200 m²) of HDPE membrane, 60 mil (1.5 mm) thick, along with geotextiles.
   
• Aerated Lagoons (1991), Wastewater Treatment Plant. Client: Municipality of Lacolle, Québec. Quality Control Manager for the shop fabrication of 220,000 ft² (20,000 m²) of PVC membrane, 40 mil (1 mm) thick, along with geotextiles.

• Secondary Containment for Fuel Tanks (1991). Client: Esso Petroleum, Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Québec. Quality Control Manager for the shop fabrication of 4,000 ft² (375 m²) of "Hytrel" reinforced polyester elastomer membrane.
   
• Double-Lined Hazardous Waste Landfill (1990). Client: Cintec Environnement inc., Ville Lasalle, Québec. On-site Quality Control Manager for the installation and welding of 151,000 ft² (14,000 m²) of HDPE membrane, 80 mil (2 mm) thick, along with geotextiles, geogrids, and geonets.
