Assignment No. 1: EIS Summaries

Go to the third floor of the Library, in the Documents section; look under the Federal Documents.  They are organized by Federal Agencies: Department of Interior (Bureau of Reclamation, Fish and Wildlife Service, etc.); Department of Agriculture (Forest Service, National Resource Conservation Service, etc.); Department of Energy; Department of Defense; etc.

Find three Final Environmental Impact Statements (FEIS) for projects you are interested in.  This is important since we will be using those again in later assignments.  They must not be too complex in scope or in policy.  Do not choose any FEIS document dealing with a Forest Plan or a major policy issue, or any program EIS; pick documents that study specific actions you will be able to grasp clearly.  You will probably need to spend a few hours browsing in the Federal Documents section to find these documents.

Write a summary of each FEIS.  These summaries must allow a reader to understand the proposed action, the alternatives considered, the main issues (significant effects) of the proposed action, and the major conclusions of the FEIS.  Each summary should be half a page to one page long (1.5 line spacing in a reasonable 10 pts or 12 pts font) and in memorandum format.  Be clear, concise, and specific.  Style, grammar and spelling will be considered.

Due date: Monday, January 25 (by 5:00 PM).
