Over The Edge Live-Action Role-Playing Game

General Rules

A few basic rules for the game, many of them common to all LARP games.

Conduct

  1. No physical contact.
  2. No running.
  3. No props that look like weapons or, heaven forbid, can be used as weapons.
  4. No bothering or scaring non-LARPers.

Game Flow

  1. Players are encouraged to resolve any questions, conflicts, challenges, and issues by discussing among themselves first.

  2. If this cannot be done, or the argument is getting serious, the players should look for a Game Master to arbitrate the dispute.  The GMs will be wearing identifying badges.

  3. A GM's decision is final.  Trying to play one GM against another will likely result in something with nasty sharp pointy teeth being sicced after the offending character.

Game Mechanics

  1. Each player will receive a packet containing a character ID badge, a short character briefing sheet, an overview of the rules, some cards representing advantages or equipment, and some money.

  2. There are four types of items that can be transferred from one player to another:
  3. In addition, there are other cards called Whammies which cause a one-time effect.  These are events, rather than conditions, and are not normally transferable unless the card says otherwise.

  4. To avoid any unfortunate confusion, the official play money, the gear and condition cards, and the character information will bear the GMs' seal.

  5. Economy:
  6. A play can also get a clue or secret for doing 15 minutes of Research.  In much the same way that a player spends time playing an NPC when he or she is popped, the player spends 15 minutes playing an NPC, and at the end of that time is rewarded with a clue card.

  7. Random Binary Number Generator (i.e. "Coin Toss")
  8. Some effects call for a coin toss to determine success or failure. All coin tosses should be done with a U.S. 10 cent piece. In all cases in which a player is performing some action upon another player that requires a coin toss, the player being affected flips the coin, not the player initiating the activity. Coins should not be caught, but alowed to land on the ground, and the result is read once the coin comes to rest. A result of "tails" indicates a result favorable to the person who tossed the coin, a "heads" result indicates a result favorable to the person who initiated the action. In any case where the coin does not come to rest flat on the ground it should be retossed.

Please exercise caution when tossing coins – while coins are not considered weapons by most gaming conventions, they can still hurt if they hit someone. Do not become overly exuberant when tossing your coin – you are trying for a random result, not to stick the coin into the roof of the hotel or embed it in the skull of another gamer.

Particularly paranoid players may request that a GM flip the coin for them.
