Hida Masahiro: Defeated Bayushi Tangen in an iaijutsu contest at
Kyuden Bayushi
Hida Sukune: Second son of the Crab Champion, and a great strategist; ill with tuberculosis. Amakuchi saved his life at Winter Court in Kyuden Bayushi.
Kaiu Shinya: Armorer and weaponsmith in Ryoko Owari who later turned
out to be a kumo yorei. Destroyed when he fled the city with
his spawn, right before Winter Court at Shiro no Shiba.
Yasuki Nobuko: A greasy merchant in Ryoko Owari. Died during the Night of a Thousand Screams at a previous Bon Festival.
Yasuki Todashi: Trader from Ranbo no Shien Shite Reigisaho, patron of Koso.
Asako Kaushin: Master of the Seppun Academy. Killed by impersonators in order to break into the Seppun Academy library.
Asako Kinto: Old herbalist; Shiba Shonagon's uncle.
Asako Togama: Soft-spoken scholar who came to Winter Court at Kyuden
Bayushi to translate ancient texts from the Bayushi library. Shosuro Hametsu and him exchanged presents and messages later on.
Asako Yoshimitsu: Seppun Hitomi's lover
Isawa Goro: Extremely gifted fourteen-year old strategist.
Isawa Hujo: Shugenja at Kyuden Isawa
Isawa Kujin: Governor of Kyuden Isawa
Isawa Kuzushi: (Historical) Shugenja who went rogue some few hundred years ago.
Isawa Minori: Daughter of Isawa Kujin, and working as his assistant

Shiba Hideyoshi: Gunso at Shiro no Shiba in an alternate future,
currently a five-year-old boy.
Shiba Himitsu: Groomed by Shiba Ujimitsu over the last three years
to take his place, recently ascended to Clan Champion after Ujimitsu's
death
Shiba Shineba: Mother of Shiba Arimako
Shiba Shizue: Formerly Doji Shizue. Good-looking but club-footed niece of the Emerald Champion, Doji Satsume. Wife of Shiba Himitsu. Believed by the
magistrates to be possessed by an evil shadowy entity.
Shiba Shonagon: Author of Memoirs of an Opium Eater; deceased.
Shiba Tetsu: Previously expected to be Shiba Ujimitsu's heir until
the latter started grooming Shiba Himitsu instead
Shiba Ujimitsu: Former Clan Champion, recently deceased

Bayushi Tangen: Swordsman, and for a while Amakuchi's sensei. Founder
of the Tangen school. Killed by Shinjo Bishamon in a duel, then raised
from the dead by a maho sorcerer.

Soshi Onuri: Shugenja, known to practice the Air spell used by those
who burglarized the Seppun Academy recently. Friend of Bayushi Hotei
Soshi Seiryoku: Shugenja in Ryoko Owari, and member of the opium
cartel. Killed in the opium war.
Soshi Shusuke: New karo of the Soshi family in Ryoko Owari. Short, quiet, and unassuming; believed to have trained at the Bayushi courtier school.
Yogo Junzo: Sorcerer, heir to the Yogo daimyo, and cousin of Soshi Bantaro. The magistrates met him at Winter Court in Kyuden Bayushi.
Yogo Mamoro: General, and political advisor to Shosuro Meiyoko
Yogo Osako: Second-in-command of the Ryoko Owari Thunder Guard
Ide Asamitsu: Son of Ide Baranato. Married the daughter of the Ryoko Owari governor, Shosuro Kimi, before being executed for his crimes during the Opium War.
Ide Baranato: At one point, de facto leader of the Unicorn faction in Ryoko Owari; executed for starting the Opium War.
Ide Botan: Led first red army at Winter Court wargames in Kyuden
Bayushi, and won.
Ide Dalair: Friend of Shosuro Jocho at Winter Court in Kyuden Bayushi. The Magistrates met him again at Shiro Iuchi.
Ide Imotsu: Ide Baranato's nephew, who forced duels against Mirumoto Genjiro (who lost), Shosuro Yumiko (championed by Kakita Rei, who lost), and Amakuchi (who won) at Shiro Iuchi.
Ide Tadaji: Unicorn ambassador to the Emperor's court
Iuchi Akira: Shugenja, and friend of Ide Imotsu.
Iuchi Iatsu: Karo of Shiro Iuchi, a graying man in his mid-forties.
Iuchi Notaiko: Unicorn shadow-hunter and shugenja. Ambushed the party in Dragon territory.
Iuchi Sadako: A strange young woman in Ryoko Owari, who thinks the ninja are shapeshifting eta (along with a variety of conspiracy theories).
Iuchi Yoshito: Iuchi family daimyo.
Moto Tatsuya: (Historical) The Unicorn who carried the Crystal Sword into the Shadowlands at the time of the Fall of the Moto.
Otaku Gen: Otaku Battle-Maiden. Soon to be married to Kakita Shinjiro.
Otaku Genshi: summarily executed for supplying the bandit Fade with information.
Otaku Kamoko: Otaku family daimyo; currently leading the Unicorn army agaisnt the Crab.
Shinjo Eniki: Elderly shugenja and shadow-hunter.
Shinjo Enoko: Stable-master as Shiro Iuchi.
Shinjo Hanari: Finest archer in the Unicorn clan. Hates the Crab
clan. Has a dog.
Shinjo Iruko: Shinjo Bishamon's widow and mother of his infant son.

Shinjo Kinto: Best archer among the shadow-hunter band.
Shinjo Rinari: Unicorn shadow-hunter, bushi. Ambushed the party in Dragon territory. Killed by the Shadows.
Shinjo Saru: Amakuchi's guard among the shadow-hunters.
Shinjo Sanefusa: Current de facto leader of the Unicorn faction in Ryoko Owari.
Shinjo Yasamura: Son of Shinjo Yokatsu, the Unicorn daimyo; young, cheerful, known
for the bad poetry which at one time he addressed to Soshi Yumiko.
Now married.
Eyebrows: Very savvy eta who sometimes helped the Emerald
Magistrates in Ryoko Owari with his forensic abilities.
Pitiful: Eta who serves as interrogator and torturer for
the Emerald Magistrates in Ryoko Owari, despite being essentially kind-hearted.
Both his legs have been amputated after an accident.
Raspy: Leader of the eta community in Ryoko Owari's "leatherworkers"
quarter.
