Fading Suns to 7th Sea

Character Creation Basics

A standard hero is created with 120 Hero Points instead of the 100 pts used in 7th Sea.  This is because certain built-in benefits tied to one's nation or status, as well as the Destiny spread, are not available in this version.

The approximate order of character creation steps is:

Character Concept: Playing 21 Questions

These are the 21 questions from 7th Sea, slightly amended.  Answering them should help flesh out the character.
  1. What planet is your character from?
  2. How would you describe your character?
  3. Does your character have any recurring mannerisms?
  4. What is your Hero's main motivation?
  5. What is your Hero's greatest strength? Greatest weakness?
  6. What are your Hero's most and least favorite things?
  7. What about your Hero's psychology?
  8. What is your Hero's single greatest fear?
  9. What are your Hero's highest ambitions? His/her greatest love?
  10. What is your Hero's opinion of his/her ruling House?
  11. Does your Hero have any prejudices?
  12. Where do your Hero's loyalties lie?
  13. Is your Hero in love? Is s/he married or betrothed?
  14. What about your Hero's family?
  15. How would your Hero's parents describe him/her?
  16. Is your Hero a gentleman or gentlewoman? Or a scoundrel?
  17. How religious is your Hero? What sect of the Church does s/he follow?
  18. Is your Hero a member of a guild, knightly order, or secret society?
  19. What does your Hero think of Technology?
  20. If you could, what advice would you give your Hero?
  21. How do you (the player) want this character to die?

Traits

There are five traits to consider:
  • Brawn is a measure of health and strength, and determines both how hard you hit and how well you resist damage;
  • Wits is a measure of alertness and intelligence, and in combat determines how quickly you react to attacks;
  • Finesse is a measure of your agility, dexterity, and nimbleness; and determine how well you hit in combat;
  • Panache represents both quickness and style, and determines how many actions you get in combat;
  • Resolve is a measure of your willpower and determines how much damage you can endure before you fall down.
Your Hero's lowest trait determines how many Drama Dice you get at the beginning of a story.  In general, it is recomended to have at least 2 in all Traits, and 3 in at least two Traits.  Traits begin at 1 at character creation and cost 8 Hero Points per level to raise.

The languages are relatively more expensive than in 7th Sea because Urthish and Latin are really the only languages that are commonly spoken.  As in 7th Sea, it cost one more point to read and write the language (when available).  Acquaintance with a language can be bought for one point less than the nominal cost and cannot be combined with literacy in this language, but can be combined with the Linguist Advantage. Pidgin is not available in this version of the game.  The minimum cost of learning a language (other than one's native language) is always 1 Hero Point.
