Dragaera for 7th Sea - Sorcery

Another alternate setting for 7th Sea:

Sorcery

This is sorcery before the Interregnum, before the Sea of Chaos, before the Orb went to the Paths of the Dead, and before Zurika brought it back.  It is consistent with the sorcery described in The Phoenix Guards and Five Hundred Years After, and therefore fairly weak compared to what has become possible by the time of Vlad Taltos's adventures.  Moreover, this is strictly Dragaeran sorcery; no Pre-Empire sorcery until Adron comes along.

Skill: Sorcery

You can use Sorcery.  You start with 3 Sorcery points for minor talent and 7 Sorcery points for a major talent.  You start at Apprentice level.  To become an Adept, you must have rank 4 in at least 4 knacks.  To attain the rank of Master, you must have rank 5 in at least 5 knacks.  Minor talents cannot reach the rank of Master.

Cost: 20 Hero Points (minor talent) or 40 Hero Points (major talent); 5 Hero Points less for Athyra.

Sorcery involves channeling and shaping power obtained from the Orb into a spell.  The various spells (Knacks) are described below.

  1. Spells can be engraved or written onto items, which are then made part of a ritual to unlock that power.

  2. You may only invoke a number of spells per day equal to your Wits times two.

  3. You may only control up to your Resolve in spell effects at one time.  To use more requires a raise per excess spell on every action attempted.  If you fail this, all the spells fail or expire, and you take 1 kept die in damage per spell being used at the time.
