Another alternate setting for 7th Sea:

Introduction

I've longed for quite a while to have a role-playing game set in Dragaera.  I discussed it often with my partner in crime Edmund; we even started making an attempt using the Everway system (designed by Jonathan Tweet and now published by Gaslight Press).  This may still happen if we ever want to run it as a play by e-mail game, but for a more traditional game I think that the 7th Sea system would work very well.  So here is my second attempt to adapt 7th Sea to an alternate setting!

Unless otherwise specified, I use all the house rules from my husband's 7th Sea campaign.

I would really appreciate any comments, suggestions, and constructive criticism readers might have; please write to Sophie Lagacé.  (Note that to use this address, you'll need to remove the "SPAMMERSMUSTDIE." portion, including the dot.)   So far as I know there have been few attempts to convert 7th Sea to other settings posted on the Web (the only one I can think of is Mark Manlapas' Sabres and Steam), and I sure would like to hear what people think of the idea.  There has been no playtesting of this adaptation to date, so take it with a grain of salt.

The various tables are available upon in request in Excel 97 format (or tab-delimited text, etc.) for easier use.

Notes on the Adaptation

Overall it is an easy fit, not the least because the books on which the adaptation is based, the Phoenix Guards series, were themselves inspired by Alexandre Dumas's Three Musketeers series.  Swordsman Schools are an easy conversion because several schools are already described in Steven Brust's books.  The skills, equipment, weapons, and armour are also a close match, with flash stones replacing firearms.

The main difference lies in the way sorcery works: there is only one main type of sorcery, based on drawing power from the Orb.  Admittedly, I need to write a description for Pre-Empire Sorcery and Witchcraft, but those should be rare and expensive.  For one thing, I wouldn't really want Pre-Empire Sorcery loose in Dragaera – look what happened when Lord Adron tried that!

I also fiddled with the Arcana, Advantages and Backgrounds to make them fit the setting better.  This is admittedly a series of judgment calls.  One thing that finds no equivalent in Dragaera is the Church; there are gods, but they're more like extra powerful neighbours than supreme beings.
