Background
Ushida is actually a Shusoro spy whose daimyo, Shusuro Kitsuko, wants Togashi Kaneka's death investigated. The Shosuro are a family of the Scorpion clan, who handle all things shady. The mythology is that when Hantei became the first emperor, he asked his brother Bayushi to handle the family's dirty laundry because no one else could handle it. All the dirty deeds that have to be done, honour or no... The Scorpion clan is perceived as parasitic scum, sort of classy Yakuza, but they do serve a purpose too. Sometimes. The Shusuro family supplies spies and if there were ninja, which there aren't of course because ninja are a myth, they would supply that too.The Scorpion have a lot of Jhereg in them, if you're a fan of the Steven Brust books. And they firmly believe that law and order are good, because every law creates a new opportunity for profit. Togashi Kaneka was a good magistrate and came down hard on bandits and rogue lords -- who didn't belong to any clan and didn't pay any percentage to the Scorpion. The Scorpion liked Kaneka just fine... They want the killers dead, they want to leave a sign for other bandits and rogues that the Scorpion clan was instrumental in this cleanup, and they want someone else to bring imperial law to the wild lands. Shosuro Rintaro, a.k.a. Agasha Ushida, is at the funeral to take care of this. Naturally, if he gets caught impersonating a samurai of another clan, the repercussion will be serious -- at least for him.
