Background

Tokkan, and his twin sister Shuurai, were born during the height of a tremendous storm. At the very moment the twins issued forth, a mighty blast of lightning slashed down from the heavens. The impact of this blast split a tree right outside the window of the birthing room exactly in half. A very potent omen, indeed.

At a very young age, both children displayed an amazing aptitude in the field of magic. Even at this early age of 6, the twins started their education in the mystical arts. As they went through their childhoods, and adolescence, they had little time for much else but their studies. Though the walls of the family mansion frequently rang with childish laughter and the crackle of electricity.

Unfortunately, when the twins reached 15 years of age, their father and mother were killed by a band of marauding Shadow creatures while the twins were out on a training assignment with their mentor, Tesso. Following the tragedy, Tesso took both youngsters in, and trained them in his tower on the hill.

The years went by, and the twins trained and planned their vengeance  upon the forces of darkness. Finally, Tesso, acknowledged that he could teach them no more. The only way they could learn further was by living their lives.Their course was obvious, they would carry the assault to the Shadowlands together! The venture was a disaster. They were ambushed near the border of the dark lands. The fighting was furious, but when it was over, Tokkan was left for dead and his sister Shuurai was carried away by the foul creatures of darkness.

It took Tokkan days to crawl from that dreadful place, using the last of his strength. He was found by monks of the Dragon clan. They took him in and healed him to the point where he could get about on his own. He made his way back to the abandoned family estate. While he recovered his strength, he rebuilt his family's estate. He now uses the mansion house, deep in a secluded valley, as a base of operations from whence he goes forth on adventures, seeking knowledge of his missing sister, and power to bring his vengeance to those that have wronged him and his family.

Tokkan with his basket hat He appears to be a very serious man in his mid-twenties, but in spite of all that has happened, he still maintains a sense of humor.  His ceremonial garb is a dark blue full length robe, embroidered with silver a Phoenix rising from, not a fire, but a burst of lightning. The collar and sleeves are the traditional colors of the Phoenix clan, red and yellow.  His travelling/fightin' duds are a tunic covered with a shirt of scale mail and loose fitting pants, all covered with a flowing cloak.  He usually dresses in a sort of ornate scale armor, and when in public often wears a great basket hat that hides his features from observers.

His gear and clothing is always of the finest quality, as he see befits his wealth and status. Making sure to always have, in addition to materials needed for spells and material for making notes and journal entries, a good supply of pipe weed, and a long stemmed ivory pipe, with a bowl carved into the shape of a Phoenix afire. He carries all these in a travelling bag, with a shoulder strap. Along with the travelling tea set, rations, spare clothing, and a bedroll (for those nights when one cannot find an inn) of course.

Note:
The pictures of Tokkan are actually of James Pax playing "Lightning," one of the Three Storms in John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China.  Used without permission, but with great affection.  Killer movie, and the collector's edition DVD was just released on May 22, 2001!  The photos were obtained by Tokkan's player, Mark, from a Web site named "The Wing Kong Exchange" after Lo-Pan's offices/fortress/lair.  No copyright challenge intended.
