Deadlands: Hell on Earth

Ode To Sam the Huckster

To the tune of "Ode to Billy Joe" by Bobby Gentry (as sung by Teresa Vasquez) -- By Edmund.

It was the third of June, another desperate, dirty, Hell-on-Eartha day
Me and Benedict and Yoshi was fightin' Froggers and were in a bad way
This new guy had come with us, we had met him back in Leedsville town
He had a deck of cards he said would help us when the chips were down
He dealt himself a hand, but then his eyes they started glowing blue
The huckster Sam McAllister got stomped on by a Manitou

I turned and said to Benedict, as Sam convulsed and fell to his knees
"I think there's something wrong with him, now get this Frogger off me please."
"Sam's trying to help us out, which I think's a pretty worthwhile goal"
And Benedict opined how he thought that Sam had blown his roll
Sam tried another hex on us, but his bad luck was running true
The huckster Sam McAllister got stomped on by a Manitou.

Then Yoshi sprinted in and said that coming down the street
Was a Doombringer with Nuke who wanted to turn us all into meat
We'd better duck and cover and hey, was Sam all right?
The way his head is spinning round, you know that's quite a sight.
Sam tried to cast a hex again, then gnashed his teeth and spittle flew.
The huckster Sam McAllister got stomped on by a Manitou.

My patron saint El Gato said to me, hey Vasquez, what you thinkin' 'bout?
That huckster guy's possessed and he is surely gonna try to take you out.
He might have seemed OK when you met him back in Leedsville town
But now he's just a mad dog, and you'd better just put the crazy sucker down
So I beat old Sam around the head and stomped him hard and when I got through
The huckster Sam McAllister was beaten bloody black and blue.

A game has come and gone since that huckster went and got possessed
I didn't kill Sam after all, it didn't fit with "Law of the West"
He's rearranged his character so now he rolls a few more dice
He's got a few less spells now, but the ones he has are pretty nice
We still let him hang around, but we still don't trust Sam through and through
We're all waiting for the day when he gets stomped again by another Manitou
