Rapanui Sinne

(a.k.a. "Squidgirl", etc.)

Rapanui Sinne is a fourth-generation Poseidon Native, a systemic osmoform or "Squid". Her grandparents Mia and Caliban, who are still living, grew up as the first Poseidon-born generation during the early years of Abandonment. Rapanui was raised in a typical Native settlement, and developed a strong attachment to her people and her world. Her grandparents had an unusual degree of influence on her, for though she was raised in the communal fashion practiced by Natives, Mia and Caliban remained very present in the girl's life. The grandparents' lifelong pairing was also somewhat unusual, and their status is notable as some of the last representatives of the advanced science that presided to the early years of the Athena Project. Both were very active in the formative years of the colony.

Rapanui is 34. She was born the year that the UNSS Admiral Robert Perry made its arrival in the Lambda Serpentis system. She vividly remembers the first violent clash, ten years ago, between the newcomer colonists and the natives on Epoch Island. This event and her reaction to it shaped her drive to act for the protection and interest of her people. She became active with the loosely organized force of volunteers that ensured some sort of emergency response, arbitration, and order in the native settlements, and when GEO founded the Native Patrol a few years later, she hopped on board.

In the Patrol, she acquired useful skills and contacts; in turn, her familiarity with Native culture made her job easier. She also gained some familiarity with the colonial, GEO, and Incorporate mentalities. She worked with several good officers, but her best teammate was her partner Bob, a beluga and first-generation immigrant; they met right from the start of the Native Patrol. Bob joined speak/do/far/body/water/same, also know as Cet-Tel. Rapanui's grandparents belonged to the pod from before its agreement with Hydrospan, when it was known as bay/shallow/fish/catch/body/water/same, or Starfall Limited Partnership, a Native-owned fishing cooperative and mixed pod.

Over the years, Rapanui used her savings to pay for a number of useful biomods; this wasn't as difficult as it sounds since like most Natives her lifestyle was very inexpensive. The first one was an easy decision: anti-poison is tremendously useful on Poseidon, particularly for someone who often had to work far from populated centers and modern health care. After that, other modifications seemed less outlandish. The next one was also practical, especially for a law enforcement officer: she underwent the necessary surgery for an adrenal shunt.

In 2198, the Ecological Crimes division of the Patrol was responsible for one of the largest eco-crime busts in Poseidon's history when the NIS was caught running a sizable unregistered and illegal Long John harvesting operation. Though many parts of the case are still in litigation two years later, the case has already cost the company over 470,000,000 cs in fines, damages, and reparations. Bounties from the bust made several of the arresting officers, including Bob and Rapanui, relatively wealthy.

Rapanui used her bounty money to buy a few additional mods, including echolocation. During her time serving the Native, cetacean, and newcomer populations of Poseidon, she had become imbued with a drive to integrate the best aspects of other cultures, particularly cetacean culture. She had always enjoyed cetacean singing, had a good ear, and was fairly apt at understanding InterSpec, but had been extremely saddened by failure in a recent search-and-rescue case. A very young fin had been pinned under wreckage, and Sinne had been first responder. The inability of the calf to understand her English had prevented him from following her instructions, resulting in the calf's death before cete rescuers arrived on the scene. With the echolocation mod, Rapanui started practicing "spoken" InterSpec, promising herself that this kind of tragedy would not happen again. With the bulk of the money, she purchased more expensive - and extensive - biomodifications. She underwent so-called "transhuman" gene correction and, in a fit of spendthriftness, accelerated neurons.

Unfortunately, the NIS case also generated enough trouble that the GEO took the agents involved off the front lines and put them in minor administrative positions. Rapanui, with her collection of new enhancements designed to make her a better front-line officer, was bored out of her skull. After almost seven years with the Patrol, she also came to feel that too much of her efforts were directed towards upholding laws that were made to serve Incorporate interests. She wanted to work for Poseidon, for its Natives as well as its dedicated colonists, not for the greed of off-worlders who only planned to rip out what riches they could from the womb of the planet and reign over the luckless, the destitute and the downtrodden. Bob and her mustered out and founded the Sinne-Bob Detective Agency.

One of their early cases brought them in contact with a recently arrived off-worlder, Fletcher Christian. Though neither Rapanui nor Bob were particularly trusting of complete strangers, Christian soon demonstrated that he could be relied on under fire. After getting to know each other better by working together on a few cases, Christian, Sinne and Bob agreed to join forces; Christian became a full partner and the agency was renamed Christian-Sinne (it just sounded better). Soon after, scientist Callista Doyle approached the agency with an offer of her own, and the hiring of technical consultant Mark Silverback completed the current roster.

In terms of personality, Rapanui is pretty easy-going on a personal level, though not professionally. She has high work ethics, and really wants this agency to work. Otherwise, she is pretty tolerant of various other sentients, but intensely dislikes those who buy into (pun intended) the Incorporate credo. When not working, Rapanui loves sailing, collecting seashells, writing fiction and essays, and dating. Like most Natives, she has had a varied love-life - no major crushes yet, but a string of amicable ex-boyfriends.

She keeps a pet marine iguana called Prometheus.
