Glossary
A few words that may need explanation in medieval Iberia, circa 1200.
General
- Almohad
- The dynasty now in power in the Islamic world.
- Autocrat
- The person who governs the mundane concerns of a covenant; may be a magus or a mortal.
- Caliph
- The supreme ruler of the Islamic world, currently reigning from Morocco.
- Castellan
- Governor of a castle
- Fief
- Land or revenue-producing propertygranted by a lord in return for a vassal's service.
- Kabbalist
- A practioner of the Jewish mystical tradition based on the Kabbalah, the numerologic study of the Bible and sacred texts.
- Mameluk or mameluke
- A member of a military caste of the Moorish empires, originally composed of slaves from Turkey.
- Moor
- European name for all southern people, but particularly for Muslims.
- Mozarab
- Name for Christians living in Al Andalus: literally, Arab-like.
- Order of Geonim
- The polite fiction legitimizing the Treaty of Barcelona, the peace accord between the Order of Hermes and Judaic magical traditions (kabbalists and to a lesser extent baal shem).
- Praeco
- Head magus or maga of a Tribunal, usually the senior magus.
- Primus/Prima
- Head magus (or maga) of a covenant.
- Roman
- In the Order of Hermes, refers to the Islamic Hermetic tradition.
- Seneschal or steward
- Manager of an estate or household.
- Sodalis
- Term of address from a magus or maga for a fellow member of the order of Hermes.
- Vassal
- A person granted the use of land in return for homage, fealty, and military service.

Moorish (Arabic)
- A'Salaam Aleikum
- Arabic greeting, "Peace be unto you." The proper response is "Wa'Aleikum Salaam", "And peace unto you".
- Dhimmi
- Non-Muslim "People of the Book" (i.e., Christians and Jews) in Islamic society.
- Franj
- Arabic name for Europeans. Lit. "Frank", "Frankish".
- 'Id-al-Fitr
- "Feast of Breaking the Fast", the feast that marks the end of the month of Ramadan.
- Laylat-al-Qadr
- "The Night of Power"; festival that occurs towards the end of Ramadan, celebrating the giving of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad.
- Rumi
- An Arabic nickname for Europeans. Lit. "Roman".
- Taifa
- Small kingdom; Andalusian city-state.
- Taifa King
- Ruler of one of the small city-kingdoms of Andalusia.

- Baal shem
- Lit. "master of the name." Practioner of Jewish name-based white magic.
- Goy (pl. Goyim)
- Jewish name for someone who is non-Jewish.
