Noemi bat Salamon

Baal Shem, Castellan of Las Ermitas

Noemi is from a Jewish family in Qurtuba (Cordoba).  As soon as she was sixteen, Noemi was married off to a man twenty years her senior, Davi ben Aaron.  This arrangement was in no way unusual, since a man has to be well-settled in his business before he can provide for a family.

Davi was a silversmith but also a Ba'al Shem, a maker of amulets and charms imbued with power derived from True Names.  To his surprise, his new wife who seemed barely out of childhood showed both interest and aptitude for his trade.  Despite the age difference, Noemi and Davi were actually quite content together, and had a daughter, Carima.  But Davi caught a sudden ague which sapped his strength and carried him off within a few days, leaving Noemi a young widow with an infant daughter and an incomplete training in Name magic.

Noemi discovered she was not welcome in Isbili (Seville), where she was disdained as a meddler in things she could not comprehend.  She decided to return to Qurtuba, where her family dwelled, and opened a small jewelry shop.  There, a woman named Sara showed interest in her, and told her of a group of Goyim philosophers, both Moslem and Rumi, who had great interest in aracane knowledge and would be interested in her work.  Noemi moved to the small village of Las Ermitas.
