Blacksmith of Las Ermitas
|
Jesus was apprenticed to be a blacksmith, but wound up in the army instead when his lord called up the levies to fight the heathen. He served for three years, earning a bit of extra money by helping to maintain the weapons of his unit in the field. But one day his luck ran out and he was left wounded on the field when his Lord's armies were routed. Fortunately he was able to convince the Moors who captured him that he had sufficient skill to be worth keeping, so instead of being killed he was taken as a slave. He served his master for 5 years before his death, whereupon he was freed on the condition that he embrace Islam. For the last three years he has wandered around southern Andalusia, doing mostly odd jobs here and there, and looking for a place to settle down. In the course of his travels he found and adopted a young orphan named Saied, who he hopes to train as his apprentice one day. When he heard that a group of scholars was looking for a blacksmith he jumped at the chance to have his own smithy once again. Jesus is a straightforward and quiet man, dedicated to his work. He is determined to make a home for himself and Saied, and spends some time each week practicing with the turb (though he has no real intention of accomponying the magi on "adventures" he will fight feroceously to defend his home). He hopes one day to find a wife, now that he has settled down. |
