The Chronicle:
Synopsis: The Fifth Switch (Quartus 1669)
Mumblety Peg
Sailing down the Roth River and hugging close to the Wische bank, the heroes saw a Castillan-style frigate in Pösen colours sail up to meet them. They signalled to the Falcon's Roost that the frigate was likely to be more interested in harassing the Maris Stella, and the brigantine sailed past, ready to flank the larger frigate and help the heroes. They could see the name of the ship, El Toro Rojo, as it sent signals to heave to and prepare to be boarded.
Then Ferdinand nudged his companions and pointed out a familiar silhouette on the new ship's deck: Philip Gosse was waving at them. Delighted, Constanza "surrendered" to the pirates who "robbed" the Maris Stella of half of its supplies. The heroes told Gosse how they had been the ones to purchase the frigate for Pösen in the first place, and how pleased they were to see it put to better use. Constanza assured Gosse that she would be happy to offer any assistance he might ever require, and they parted company.
The heroes continued making their way towards the Trade Sea, unsure where to go next to fulfil the Prophecy. That problem, however, was solved a couple of nights later. Ferdinand was on the deck, taking some fresh air, when he noticed a display of St. Elmo's Fire in the top of the masts. The phenomenon grew rapidly, spreading along all metallic surfaces, and Ferdinand rushed to wake Constanza.
Constanza went on deck to find that the sea was now like quicksilver, the sky was white, and the stars were black, forming unfamiliar constellations. She immediately recognized the description of the Seventh Sea. By the time everyone was up and gathered on deck, every metallic object on board (except the Sword of the Nibelungen) was crested with St. Elmo's Fire and giving off a good static charge when touched. There was no wind and no waves, but the ship moved on steadily, under some unknown power. Upon taking one look at the sea, Gerald Höhne immediately dove overboard without a word, and disappeared from sight. Jemy, who like everyone else had climbed on deck, was heard to speak for the first and only time since he'd been on board. In Thean, he murmured: "It is the power of the Overlord." Constanza, surprised, questioned him but he answered no more than his usual shrugs.
When Constanza called to the lookout, no one answered so Lucas climbed to the crow's nest to take a look. It was empty, but Lucas got a look of the glittering seas and churning skies in a circular pattern around the Maris Stella. Lucas started climbing down, and not too soon: moments after he left the crow's nest, lightning gathered in the sky and struck the spot where he'd been.
They continued on for a while, since the Maris Stella was now moving under its own impetus. After a while, the storm dissipated and Ferdinand climbed to the crow's nest to look for some sign of land. He found none, but he did discover that someone was now in the crow's nest. He recognized the mechanical man Constanza had fought on top of the Spear of the West Wind, or its twin. The metal man announced that he sought Captain Orduño, and when Ferdinand pointed to the deck, it slid down along the rigging while Ferdinand climbed down in more normal fashion.
The metal man, who spoke like a veritable parody of a pirate, announced to Constanza that she must activate the Sixth Switch, but that he must first take her to the Fifth. When she answered that she did not understand him at all, he told her that she must raise Cabora. Looking very unhappy, she explained to her friends what she knew of the significance of the Island of the Sunken Eye. When asked what he was called, the mechanical man answered "Mumblety Peg".
While they spoke to the metal man, the sky returned to normal and the Maris Stella suddenly re-emerged in a more ordinary-looking sea. Mumblety Peg indicated their position on a chart, in the southeastern part of the Mirror Sea. He then called for a course taking them further south. For lack of a credible alternative, Constanza agreed to take this course. Mumblety Peg then took a position on the left of the quarterdeck, immobile as a statue.
The Explorers
After a couple of days of sailing in this unknown sea, a sail was spotted on the horizon at last. She was following the same course. When they came up upon her close enough to make her out, the Maris Stellas identified a well-armed merchant with thirty six-pounders, flying the flags of Avalon and the Explorers' Society. She also sent a terse request for the Maris Stella to announce her own colours, which were promptly hoisted. Mumblety Peg identified the other ship as the Discovery.
Once the Maris Stella was close enough, the other ship sent a shot across her bow and demanded that she stop. Constanza complied readily, since she wanted to speak to the Discovery's crew as well. A long boat filled with well-armed people left the Avalonian ship and approached the Maris Stella. But just when its occupants were about to clind the ladder thrown down for them, they caught sight of Mumblety Peg and became furious. They shot at the construct, though they were too far for a good opportunity. Constanza's effort to calm them down were useless, so she lowered a long boat of her own to try to meet in the middle, in a less threatening situation.
The heroes rowed to the Discovery and the Explorers allowed a single person to climb aboard. Lucas went, since his Avalonian was better than Constanza's, and he managed to convinced the Explorers' leader, Cossette St. Clair, to let them all come aboard and discuss the situation. The heroes told the story of their arrival via the Seventh Sea, and Mumblety Peg's sudden apparition. They also mentioned that Reis and Caligari were also expected to look for Cabora.
In exchange, they learned that the Discovery was, until recently, commanded by Captain Guy McCormick. Ten years before, McCormick's wife Amanda, another Explorer who studied the Seventh Sea, had mounted an expedition and disappeared. The Captain had apparently made his peace with this, but about a year ago Mumblety Peg had sought him out, wearing Amanda's old jacket and promising McCormick that there was a way to find his wife again by raising Cabora. McCormick had listened to Mumblety Peg's promises and gradually become obsessed with Cabora. In time, he had also allied with the Corsair Khereid-Din, going so far as to sell crewmembers to the Crescent pirate as slaves. Finally, his shieldman Cossette had led a revolt against him, but McCormick and Mumblety Peg had managed to kidnap the ship's navigator Maggie Malone, and flee with Khereid-Din.
This shed a new light on several portions of Gunrud Stiggandsdottir's prophecy. Constanza told the entire story to Cossette. By comparing notes, it became clear that the Mumblety Peg that had contacted McCormick could not be the same one who had been atop the Spear of the West Wind, nor the one now on the Maris Stella. This did not faze the heroes too much, since they already knew there had to be at least two such constructs, but the Explorers had not known that Mumblety Peg was not human, although they had noted that he was extremely heavy.
The Explorers' wariness was gradually somewhat appeased. They were rushing towards the Island of the Fifth Switch to free Maggie Malone and perhaps McCormick if he could be talked back to some sanity. The heroes were now convinced that Maggie Malone must be the woman mentioned in the Prophecy, which must be saved by Constanza's hand or by none. Heroes and Explorers agreed to work together, but since the Maris Stella was the faster of the two ships, she reached the island first.
The Island of the Fifth Switch was literally covered with Syrneth ruins, resulting in an odd-looking skyline. As they approached, the heroes saw a Crescent galley which must be the Strange Skies. Constanza decided to make use of Mumblety Peg (Mark III) since it wanted them to reach the Fifth and Sixth Switches and raise Cabora. She asked it information about the anchorages around the island and found out that the mechanical man knew an astounding amount about the island. She asked it to indicate an achorage that would be deep enough for the Maris Stella, would take them out of sight of the Strange Skies, and would be as close as possible to the Fifth Switch. Mumblety Peg answered with instructions that were far too specific for the limits of Thean navigation, but sufficed to take the ship in. From the shore, the heroes could see that the island was devoid of any plant or animal life.
The Island
The heroes took a long boat and rowed to the island, bringing their Mumblety Peg. There, they found a strange landscape of volcanic chimneys covered with carvings, sigils, clockwork, and ruins. Mumblety Peg guided them at a breakneck pace across the difficult terrain, insisting that time was short. The heroes eventually came up on a group of Crescents, accompanied by another Mumblety Peg wearing a red vest. The two Mumblety Pegs immediately collided at full speed, dealing each other incredible damage, while the heroes fought off the Crescent Corsairs. Only one of the Crescents escaped, but the heroes' Mumblety Peg was almost completely demolished, but for its head which was still able to talk.
The heroes took the head with them and kept moving, until they reached the peak high at the center of the island. There, they found a large statue made of clockwork, which looked like a tall spindly humanoid. Wary, they questioned what was left of their Mumblety Peg and learned that this was a Guardian, which was going to ask them for "information" in order to let them pass. When they approached, the thing came to life and refused them access, stating that their "Guardian" was "non-functional". However, the Mumblety Peg head asked them to raise it high enough to reach the clockwork Guardian's eye level. Beams of red light blinked back and forth between the two constructs' eyes, until the clockwork Guardian knelt to be at Constanza's level.
"Sword Bearer," it said. "You will assist?"
Constanza nervously acquiesced, and the Guardian instructed her: "Terminate the unit."
Constanza hesitated, then took out the Sword of the Nibelungen and plunged it in the Guardian's metallic chest. It fell over, but the Mumblety Peg head then said it would have been better to just take the Guardian's head off, and the unit was now non-functional. However, Constanza managed to repair the Guardian and replace its head with Mumblety Peg's. The Guardian's body morphed and it took on the Mumblety Peg's appearance.
A hatch appeared where the Guardian had been, opening onto deep darkness below. When the heroes dropped a rope, they saw something flash about every ten feet, as the rope slowly seem to bounce again and again as it fell. Ferdinand went down first, and discovered that it was like falling through glue and hitting a ledge every ten feet. The rest of the heroes climbed down after him. After 150 feet, they discovered that they were out of rope but not anywhere near the bottom. Ferdinand let go and slid all the way down, another 250 feet of unpleasant fall. As he hit the bottom, he found himself facing the business end of a pair of pistols, and the man wielding them asked in Avalon: "Captain Orduño?"
Ferdinand shook his head, and as each of the heroes fell, the man repeated the question. Finally, Constanza arrived and answered the man, Guy McCormick. Another man was there, which all recognized as the Corsair Khereid-Din, as well as a couple of Crescent crewmen and the red-vest Mumblety Peg. The other Mumblety Peg was the last to fall, and the two went at it again. This turned into a general brawl, in which Khereid-Din managed to knock Constanza unconscious and steal the Sword of the Nibelungen from her, then shooting up the Syrneth slide and abandoning his associates.
This time, the red-vest Mumblety Peg lost the fight against the newly upgraded model. The heroes prevailed over the rest of the pirates, but only after taking bad wounds. Tremors started shaking the island. Melisandre and Lucas were the only left standing; while Lucas and Mumblety Peg ferried Ferdinand and Constanza out, Melisandre tiptoed to the Fifth Switch, something like a gigantic armillary sphere in which a woman was held prisoner. Alas, the woman was already dead, and Melisandre ended up trapped in the tunnels when the Syrneth slide stopped working. The other heroes were barely able to reach the Maris Stella before the island sank beneath the waves.
