The Island of the Beast is situated in the Western Isles and is under Montaigne control. It seems to be of volcanic nature, as indicated by the cones of two dormant volcanoes. The island is notable for its Syrneth ruins, particularly for six towers ringing it which can generate an impenetrable force field. In the center of the island is a clearing which contains a pool which can project images and thought in the mind. Because the pool was meant for non-humans, its effect places a great strain on human minds.
The Montaigne groundskeepers use the island for sport, as a hunting preserve where they release dangerous creatures from all over Théah, brought through Porté sorcery. The beasts go insane in the process, making them all the fiercer. Rich and decadent nobles then come to the island for sport, hunting the beasts. The hunters are kept safe from the beasts by the force fields generated by the Syrneth installations. Because of the VIPs that constantly visit, the island is blockaded by a small squadron of war ships.
The heroes visited the island during the Scoundrel's Folly adventure,
when they discovered that the ruins are the prototype of a machine built
by a Syrneth race to harness the power of the stars themselves. The
device, the viewing pool, and the wards can be activated using two aether
compasses which the heroes had obtained from princess Dominique de Montaigne
and her husband General Montegue. They fought Lucius Malveck for
control of the compasses.
